Senior Citizens, did anyone know of someone who built a bomb shelter in their backyard in the early 60's? - backyard huts
And if so, do you know if they still exist, and what is now used?
I remember they sold kits to make their own shelter - which Quonset huts that were underground seemed. As a child, I thought it would be good to have in the backyard - never gave much thought atomic bombs at that age.

A friend and I decided to dig a shelter in the garden. The search lasted about 5 minutes when I noticed that the neighboring white sheets hanging in their yard. Two 10-year-old stole land lumps. More digging, flew more lumps. We cover both til the leaves had barely left a blank. Why is not that we do not, we will be in trouble, never occurred to me. We had a lot of fun, until the next day. My neighbor never told my parents. I had a few votes for change to be done. Talk about a neighbor's cool to have the time. Thanks for the memories.:)
I was born in 1947 and grew up in Buffalo, which was on the list of nuclear targets for its steel production of highly charged, but I've never had a bunker in a backyard. But they were omnipresent in public buildings. Each school had one, and we had air raid drills several times a year.
It was in the 50s.
I own a rental property with one.
It took some time to figure out what it was.
At first I thought it was a septic tank, but we went inside. Shelves, beds, approximately 10 per 10 'totally illegal.
Apparently, these kits for about $ 2000.00 - $ 5000.00, a huge sum of money, then sold.
They were dug in the dark of night in secret.
God forbid, there should be a nuclear war, would not connect to your neighbors.
I know that 3 of them in our small town.
I was in high school in the 60s and not know my neighbors to build a bunker. I remember one student in the third to receive a label "dog" shall be used. I think it had something to civil protection, but I'm not sure?
Edit: Joe B. Since the question was for older people and not had the chance to move forward, because you do not. Simple as that!
I am very familiar with the accommodations and the use thereof. The people in Oklahoma, and even in the plains of the Texas Panhandle, the air raid shelter built in their backyard for years and years. Talk about the people who were ahead of their time. These people really were, and are likely in the future. Some of the shelters, even before the planes in the air, I think. These people are true visionaries in Oklahoma. Yes, sir, insurance, real visionary. .
My house is safe or the air-raid shelter was built in the 60s. We use the refuge for the storage and tornado warnings.
Yes, I did and do. The shelter is used for a storeroom.
No, no.
No, I've never met someone who has.
I think they were members of the John Birch Society
The elderly? It seems insulting. I was a child in the 60s, and I do not consider myself an adult.
But no, I do not know anyone who has ever built a shelter, or bomb. I think the urban myth was essentially completed. You have already heard of these things, but never really knew who had.
I still think the person who lived behind us was a ... But as I grew older I realized it was a manhole to access the help of her yard.
